Welcome to Weardale Museum

Celebrating 40 years of preserving the heritage of Weardale and its people.

Join us in the heart of Weardale, in the beautiful Durham Dales, to explore and trace the footprints of the people who lived and worked in the Dale.

  • People who were moulded by the land, dug beneath its crust, farmed its grasslands, battled the elements and made a home.
  • They left a legacy and a sense of pride that we strive to protect through our artefacts while we tell their stories.
  • How religion, hard work and sheer determination played their parts through our ever-changing history in harmony with the rugged moors of Weardale.
  • See how they lived in our Lead Miner’s Kitchen and Bedroom, discover the vast riches of the geological landscape and marvel at the beauty of Frosterly Marble.
  • Marvel at the intricate detail and incredible artistry of the Methodist Tapestries, telling the story of High House Chapel and Methodism in the World.

Testimonials

Visitor reviews

Gray Family - Swansea

“Our family visited the museum whilst on holiday in Weardale, we found it fascinating! The volunteers demonstrated a fantastic level of knowledge and couldn’t be more helpful. We will certainly be revisiting next time we’re passing through.”

D & G Scott - Durham

“My wife and I discovered the place entirely by accident and were so glad we did! We spent 2 hours looking around the exhibits and talking with museum staff. The neighbouring chapel is also worth a visit.”
